Advanced Placement Courses
(Additional considerations and fees in bold italic)

Advanced Placement courses (AP) are available in many subjects. Students will have the option to participate in an AP evaluation exam at the end of the course that could earn them college credits. The NEED PDF Course Selection Guide lists AP courses that are available through SMC. The fee for an AP final test is the responsibility of the student/parent.

CAPP Courses
(Additional considerations and fees in bold italic)

Cooperative Academic Partnership Program (CAPP) offers university level courses that award dual credit for college and high school (.5 SMC credit; 3.0 to 5.0 UW-System). CAPP courses are taught in cooperation with the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Other colleges will accept CAPP credits, but it is strongly advised that the student contact the post-secondary institutions of choice to guarantee acceptance of credits. These classes are often used as a prerequisite for many courses in the UW System. St. Mary Central students taking a CAPP class are responsible for the entire tuition, which will be determined by the post-secondary institution. Tuition payment is due within the first two weeks of each CAPP course.

Elective Credits
Elective courses have been carefully selected to prepare students for further education and to encourage exploration of various fields or occupations. A well-rounded background of general education is paramount to success in any career, so SMC provides students with the opportunity to explore many areas. To gain the most value from their high school education, freshmen should plan a tentative four-year program of electives based upon their future vocational and educational interests.

Students may choose elective courses each year as part of the total credits for graduation, subject to the following considerations:

Certain courses require prerequisites (e.g. first year German must precede second year; Algebra 1 must precede Geometry). Exceptions may be made with the consent of the teacher, counselor, and/or principal.

Students should plan to take required courses in the required grade unless they are advised to do otherwise by the teacher, counselor, and/or administration. Students selecting a world language should plan to take two years of the same language.

Independent Study Courses
St. Mary Central has educational opportunities for students in the form of extended off-site and/or independent courses of study supervised by an SMC faculty member. These opportunities provide educational experiences not ordinarily offered in the traditional classroom setting for which the student is able to receive credit.

Courses must be pre-approved by the administration and should be designed to provide academic challenge. Additional fees may be required. This course of study requires extensive planning and special permission.

KSCADE Network
(Additional considerations and fees in bold italic)

K-12 Schools/College Alliance for Distance Education (KSCADE) is a distance education network designed to provide students with greater educational opportunities through a network linking 30 schools within the greater Fox Valley area. Through the use of technology, schools have the capability to broadcast and receive courses from other schools within the consortium. By taking advantage of programming opportunities, SMC is able to provide courses not otherwise available that benefit both gifted and challenged students. The ability to use two-way audio and video incorporated with Internet access allows instructors to effectively interact with students.

For all KSCADE high school-to-high school courses originating in a participating school and granting high school credit, a fee will be charged to the receiving school. There is no charge to an SMC student taking a class in this category. For all KSCADE courses through which students may earn dual high school and college credit, students/parents are responsible for the tuition as determined by the post-secondary institution. Tuition payment is due within the first two weeks of each course.
