SMC Requirements & Procedures
Add, Withdraw from or Retake a Class
Guidelines
Graduation Recommendations and Requirements
Add/Withdraw/Retake a Class
Minimum requirements
All students are required to have a minimum of 3.5 credits per semester unless excused by the administration.
Adding a Class
A student may add a class only within the first three to five class days of each course. Permission to add a class must be obtained from the student's parent(s), teachers involved in the change, the guidance counselor and the principal before the change is finalized.
Dropping a Class
A student may drop a class only within the first three to five class days of each course. Permission for dropping a class must be obtained from the student's parent(s), teachers involved in the change, the guidance counselor and the principal before the change is finalized. If a student withdraws from a class after the fifth class day, he or she will receive an F for the semester in that course. These guidelines are waived if the class withdrawal is teacher-initiated and approved by the principal.
Schedule Changes
All schedule changes should take place no later than June 7 for the fall semester and no later than mid-December for the spring semester. Do not wait until classes start to request a schedule change. It will benefit students to have this taken care of before the new courses begin.
Retaking A Class
A student may retake a class through St. Mary Central or through the summer school consortium. The student's transcript reflects that a class has been retaken, substituting an "R" for the original grade, which is not calculated into the grade point average. The class is then re-listed on the transcript with the new grade earned, which is included in the grade point average.
