Goals to be Achieved by SMC Science Students

  • Gain critical knowledge in the areas of biology, chemistry, and physics.
  • Develop analysis and critical thinking skills required for success in scientific endeavors.
  • Develop research skills through independent research projects and an understanding of the scientific process.
  • Relate and apply abstract concepts to concrete, real-world problems.
  • Explore individual scientific interests through expanded learning opportunities.
  • Actively and effectively participate in collaborative learning experiences as well as individual accountability to maximize academic and social growth.
  • Effectively utilize technololgy such as the Vernier and Pasco systems of data collection along with the graphical analysis program for direct investigation and experimental analysis.
  • Use graphing calculators as a means of gaining valuable information without graphing data by hand.
  • Be encouraged to become involved in activities, such as TEC, EARTH, and Science Bowl Team that enhance the understanding of the physical and natural sciences.
  • Become aware of the role and responsibility of the scientific community in the solutions to global problems.
