SMC Humanities, Math & Science Teams
St. Mary Central students compete in a variety of academics-oriented programs. Students enjoy the intellectual challenge as well as the opportunity to spend time with peers who share similar interests. Many of the SMC teams consistently place well in local, state and national competitions.
Environmental Activists Respecting Their Habitat (EARTH)
The Environmental Activists Respecting Their Habitat (EARTH) Club is composed of students who wish to take care of the environment. Members of EARTH encourage recycling and environmentally friendly habits both at school and at home, and aim to further the environmental consciousness in our local community and our school.
Forensics
Team members compete in Wisconsin Forensic Coaches Association (WFCA) tournaments on four Saturdays, a conference meet and Wisconsin High School Forensic Association (WHSFA) sub district and district festivals. The season culminates with the WHSFA state meet in Madison. Students can compete in a variety of categories ranging from extemporaneous and oratorical speaking to solo and play-acting. The forensic season runs from mid-January to late April; however, the team forms in September. Students practice their speeches and pieces from October through mid-January.
Math Team
The SMC Math Team is a member of the Fox Valley Math League. The team competes against other local schools one Monday a month for six meets over the entire school year. Students can see how their "smarts" compare to other students in the area! The difficulty of questions range from Algebra to Pre-Calculus, but all levels of students are encouraged to participate. Since math can be difficult on an empty stomach, the team always makes it a point to stop and eat on their way to the meet. Math Team is a great place to explore some unusual math problems while having a great time with friends.
Science Bowl
The St. Mary Central science bowl team participates in three competitions throughout Wisconsin. Teams of five to six players compete, and all tournaments and some team events use buzz-in answer systems. SMC practices are held before school beginning in October, and team members are chosen from among those who attend practice and show the most potential to do well in competition. The Zephyr team has finished in the top three in several competitions in recent years. The team is open to any students with an interest in science.
Technology and Engineering Club (TEC)
The goal of this group is making science, math, and technology "as cool as sports." Students have the opportunity to explore various areas of engineering and technology through hands-on learning that has real-world applications. The project topics range from alternative energy sources to robotics. The center strives to meet the interests of each student in a fun filled and exciting educational environment and is open to all SMC students.
Currently, the primary focus of TEC is participation in the IFI/VEX Robotics League. Teams from St. Mary Central have advanced to the national level of competition (initially with FIRST Robotics and now with IFI/VEX) for the past several years. In Spring 2009, St. Mary Central hosted a regional robotics competition that drew dozens of teams from around the Midwest. SMC will again be a host site in Spring 2010.
