 Guidance at a Glance

The department consists of a guidance counselor and an assistant. The counselor works collaboratively with administration, teachers and staff, taking a problem-solving approach to issues that affect student progress at the high school level.

Every SMC student is required to participate in a joint meeting with guidance personnel and his or her parents or guardians at least one time each year. The purpose of this meeting is to ensure that every student is experiencing intellectual and social growth, as well as to develop a course selection strategy that will help the student achieve his or her goals.

Guidance personnel welcome questions or concerns from parents, students, and teachers. Students are encouraged to meet with their counselor as needed. Individual parent/teacher conferences may be arranged by calling the guidance office.

Students should meet with their guidance counselor as needed. Appointments should be made during their study hall periods or lunch. Students may also contact the counselor during class time in case of immediate need.

A particular focus of the guidance department is preparing students to make well-informed choices regarding their life after graduation, whether in making appropriate academic selections for post-secondary education at a four-year university, technical college or trade school, or assistance in joining the workforce or the military.

The guidance office is open every day but Friday. Please contact Cindy Nelson by email at cnelson@tcces.k12.wi.us or Diane Pagel at dpagel@tcces.k12.wi.us. They can also be reached at 920-722-7796, extension 156.

Guidance Counselor Cindy Nelson and her assistant Diane Pagel are ready to serve you!

College Preparatory Recommendations
The Guidance Office recommends that students take the following courses to prepare for college admission:

  • English - 4 credits
  • Math (algebra, geometry, advanced algebra, trigonometry and pre-calculus) - 4 credits
  • Science (physical science, biology, chemistry or physics) - 4 credits
  • Social Studies - 4 credits
  • Other academic electives (computer science, English, fine arts, math, science, social studies, world languages) - 4 credits
  • World languages - 2+ credits
  • Technology - 1 credit

Admission to a college or university is competitive. School are becoming more and more selective. Students with the strongest qualifications, including the number of courses taken and the rigor of the academic program (honors and AP courses, etc.), have the greatest chance of admission.
