 What Makes SMC Special

In short, it's the people.

  • It is the students who work hard to achieve to the best of their abilities; who grow in faith and understanding through the schools' faith formation program and service opportunities; and who pursue varied interests through the multitude of available co-curricular activities.
  • It is the administration, faculty and staff that work together to provide the best possible, individualized experience for every SMC student and who answer the calling to teach in a Catholic school.
  • It is the community that supports the school with their gifts of talent, time and treasure, who celebrate together in times of triumph and achievement, and who stand strong in support of one another in times of difficulty and sorrow.

Beginning in the 2010-11 school year, every SMC teacher and student received a laptop computer to be used as part of a technological education initiative. This program will allows faculty and students to work together using the latest technology and data.

Daily prayer, weekly rosary, prayer services, Eucharistic Adoration, Masses and sacramental opportunities as well as theological studies courses, retreats and service opportunities instill in SMC students an understanding and deepening of their Catholic faith.

A commitment to an individualized education for each student is evidenced in the training in differentiated instruction each teacher has received, the presence of a full-time learning specialist, MAP testing and the ability for students who excel to progress at a more rapid pace through the curriculum.

Almost every SMC student participates in one or more co-curricular activity. SMC is proud of the fact that coaches, directors and teachers accommodate scheduling so that students are able to participate in several areas of interest at the same time. For example:

  • How often does one see something like a basketball team member playing the electric bass in his uniform during halftime at a varsity game? At SMC, a sight like that is not uncommon.
  • How often does one see the same athletes participating in three state competitions for varsity sports in one school year? Again, at SMC, it comes as no big surprise.
  • How often does one see a student who has an outstanding grade point average, a lead role in the musical, belongs to several clubs and organizations, and goes to the state competition in his or her sport? This student is not atypical at SMC.

Opportunities such as TEC/VEX Robotics, E.A.R.T.H., Global Outreach and the world languages honor society reflect SMC's awareness of our place in the changing world and global community.
