St. Mary Central
Guidance
The Guidance Department of St. Mary Central High School performs a variety of student services, which include personal and social development, career and academic counseling.

The department consists of a guidance counselor and an assistant. The counselor works collaboratively with administration, staff, and teachers and takes a problem-solving approach to issues that affect student progress at the high school level.

Guidance personnel welcome questions or concerns from parents, students, and teachers. Students are encouraged to meet with their counselor as needed.

A particular focus of the Guidance Department is preparing students to make well-informed choices regarding their future after graduation, whether it is academic selection for post secondary education at a four-year university or technical college, or assistance in joining the work force or military.

The Guidance Office recommendations for a college curriculum include:
  • 4 credits of English
  • 1 credit of Technology
  • 4 credits of Math-Algebra, Algebra with Trig, Geometry and Pre Calculus
  • 3 credits of Social Studies
  • 4 credits of Science-Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry or Physics
  • 2 or more credits of one Foreign Language
  • 4 credits of other academic electives

College admission is competitive and selective. Students with the strongest qualifications, including number of courses taken, rigor of academic program (honors and Advanced Placement courses, etc.) and test scores have the best opportunities.

The Guidance Department assists students with applications and scholarship forms.
